 カナンの女性の信仰からの学び

マタイ15.21-28

今日の福音書は、一人の女性の信仰についてです。興味深いのは、その女性の名前は福音書には記載されていません。その女性はカナンから来ました。 その当時、カナン人は異邦人と呼ばれていました。 当然のように、ユダヤ人はカナン人を「犬」と呼んだそうです。この呼び方は、人間として、失礼で汚れた、卑劣な表現だと私は思います。なぜなら、人を犬と呼ぶことは絶対に許されないからです。

福音書では、イエス様は女性に言いました。「私はイスラエルの家の失われた羊の所にしか遣わされていない」。興味深いことに、女性はしつこく何度も救いを乞います。「主よ、どうかお助けください」と叫びました。イエス様が「子供達のパンを取って子犬にやってはいけない」とお答えになると、「主よ、ごもっともです。しかし、子犬も主人の食卓から落ちるパン屑はいただくのです」と女性は言いました。その女性の言葉のやり取りの中で、イエス様は彼女の聡明さと信仰心に心を動かされて次のように答えました。「婦人よ、あなたの信仰は立派だ。あなたの願い通りになるように。」そして、イエス様は、彼女の娘の病気をいやされました。このカナンの女性はイエス様が主であることを心の底から信じる柔らかな心の持ち主であったのではないでしょうか。

今日の福音は、信仰は謙虚に神様を信じることが何よりも大切であるということを教えています。神様の前で、カナンの女性は自分が何にも値しない異教徒であることを恥じていたはずです。それにも関わらず、彼女は神様の慈悲をお願いしました。そして、イエス様は女性の信仰の偉大さに心を打たれたのです。その結果彼女の願いは叶えられました。

皆さん、私達の日常生活には多くの課題があります。私の場合、毎日、キャンパスに行って勉強し、英語で話しをしなければなりません。ある意味、毎日同じことの連続です。時々、嫌になって、全てを投げ出したくなることもあります。こんなことをしていて、 英語が上手になるのだろうかと疑問を持つこともあります。このような時こそ、私は、勉強を始めたころの自分に立ち返り、改めて神様の導きをお願いするようにしています。

私達は毎日、人生という旅の中で、神様の元に走り寄って、助けを乞うことがあります。私達が神様に忠実であるならば、神様は私達が求めるものを与えてくださいます。ですから、困難に出会った時には神様のもとに来て信頼の心を持ってお願いしましょう。神様はいつまでも私達の人生の旅に同行してくださいます。

ところで、数日前、日本で大きな台風がありましたが、皆さんはいかがですか。 私はいつも皆さんのことを祈っています。どうぞお元気でお過ごしください。

LEARNING FROM THE FAITH OF A CANAANITE WOMAN

Mat. 15.21-28

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus. Today's gospel is about the faith of a woman. Interestingly, the woman's name is not mentioned in the Gospel. The woman was from Canaan. At that time, the Canaanites were referred to as Gentiles. Sometimes the Jews referred to the Canaanites as “dogs”. In my opinion, this designation of the Canaanites was very rude, dirty, and degrading to human dignity, especially the Canaanites at that time.

In today's Gospel, Jesus said to the woman. “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the House of Israel". Interestingly, the woman continued to plead for the salvation of her daughter. She cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, help me”. When Jesus replied that it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the house dogs, she said, "Ah, yes sir, but even house dogs can eat the scraps that fall from their master's table”.

During this conversation, Jesus was touched by the woman's intelligence and faith. Jesus said, and replied, “Woman, you have great faith. Let your wish be granted.”  This Canaanite woman must have been a tender-hearted person who believed from the bottom of her heart that Jesus was Lord. As a result of her faith, her daughter was healed.

Today's gospel teaches us that faith is about being humble and trusting God. Perhaps the Canaanite woman was ashamed that she was an idolater who did not deserve anything from Jesus. Nevertheless, she still asked for God's mercy. And Jesus was amazed by her great faith. As a result, her request was granted by Jesus.

My dear brothers and sisters, there are many challenges in our daily lives. In my case, I have to go to Monash Campus, Docklands every day to study. I have to spend almost 1 hour and 30 minutes by train. Going to Monash campus, studying, and returning to Dorish Maru Community is the same every day. Sometimes I feel tired and want to give up. Sometimes I wonder if I will get better at English when I keep doing this every day? At such times, I go back to my starting point, to learn and keep learning and ask God for help and guidance me in my life.

I guess, almost every day we come to God and ask for His help and His guidance. Like the Canaanite woman in today's gospel, if we are faithful to God and keep asking for His help, He will give us what we ask for. Never be afraid to come to Jesus, because Jesus said that He will always be with us until the end of time.

By the way, there was a big typhoon in Japan a few days ago. I always remember all of you in my prayers. I hope you are doing well.
