行動を伴わない信仰は信仰ではない-FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS ESSENTIALLY DEAD

 

「行動を伴わない信仰は信仰ではない」

マタイ 22.15-21

皆さん、今日の福音書では、ファリサイ派の人々とヘロデ派の人々が一緒にイエス様の所に行って、尋ねるところから始まります。「先生、私達は、あなたが真実な方で、真理に基づいて神の道を教え誰をもはばからない方であることを知っています。ところで、皇帝に税金を納めるのは、律法に適っているでしょうか、適っていないでしょうか」。

彼らはイエス様に対して大変失礼な質問をしました。イエス様が皇帝に税金を納めるために「はい」と言った場合、ファリサイ派の人々はイエス様が本当のユダヤ人ではなかったと主張したはずです。イエス様が「いいえ」と答えた場合、ファリサイ派の人々はイエス様が反ローマの「挑発者」であり、罰に値すると吹聴したに違いありません。イエス様はどちらに答えても、もう一方を敵に回すことになります。

そこでイエス様は並外れた賢い答えをされました。イエス様は彼らに税金を納めるための金貨を見せるように命じ、お金に誰の像が刻まれているかとお尋ねになりました。彼らは「皇帝の像がきざまれています」と答えました。するとイエス様は「では、皇帝のものは皇帝に、神のものは神に返しなさい」とお答えになりました。 彼らはイエス様の答えに驚きました。

イエス様の答えは、社会生活において賢明で公正であれ、ということを私達に教えています。これは、私達が私生活と教会の生活をきちんと両立なければならないということを意味していると思います。先週の福音書で、全てのものは神様へ、ということを学びました。神様のものを神様へ、というのは、愛の関係以外のなにものでもありません。神様から多くの恵みをもらっているからこそ、私達は愛によって応えなければなりません。

それは私達が守るべき原則だからです。イエス様が、見事な返事をした内容に、私達は信仰の原則である愛を持って生活する必要性があることを改めて確認していただきたいと思います。

口先だけの信仰は信仰ではありません。御ミサの時だけの信仰は信仰ではないのです。生活の中でイエス様の御言葉や問いかけに愛を持って行動することが、本当の意味での信仰生活です。

ところで、数日前、モナッシュ・カレッジで英語を一緒に勉強している二人の日本人と回転寿司を食べました。メルボルンの回転寿司を食べるのは、私も彼らも初めてでした。沢山の日本人が食べに来ていました。私達三人はメルボルンでの勉強や文化の違いなどの話をしながら食べました。笑い話もあり、とても楽しかったです。私は、吉祥寺教会にいたころ、メルボルンで日本人と回転ずしを食べることなど予想もしませんでした。これは神様が私に与えてくださった恵みです。こうして日々新しい経験ができること、同時に世界中から集まった神学生達と福音活動を続けていけることに心から感謝しています。

FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS ESSENTIALLY DEAD 

My dear brothers and sisters. Today's gospel begins with the Pharisees and Herodians coming together to ask Jesus. “Master, we know that you are an honest man and teach the way of God in an honest way, and you are not afraid of anyone, because a man’s rank means nothing to you. By the way, is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

Their question was a trick to bring down Jesus' popularity. If Jesus said “yes” to paying taxes to the emperor, the Pharisees would argue that Jesus was not a true Jew. If Jesus answered “no”, the Pharisees would exclaim that Jesus was an anti-Roman “provocateur” and deserved punishment. Whatever answer Jesus gave, He would turn others into enemies.

Nonetheless, Jesus gave an incredibly wise answer. Jesus showed them the gold coins they used to pay taxes and asked them whose image was engraved on the coins. They replied, “The image of the Caesar.” Jesus replied, “Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.” They were surprised by Jesus' answer.

In my opinion, Jesus' answer teaches us to be wise and fair in our social life. I think this means we should balance our personal life and our spiritual life. In last week's Gospel, we learned that everything belongs to God. Giving all we have to God is the most intimate relationship of love. We must also respond with the greatest love because we have received so many gifts from God. That, I guess, is the principle that we should adhere to. It should also be observed in our personal and religious lives. I would like to reiterate the need for us to live our lives with love, which is the principle of faith, based on the content of Jesus' marvelous response.

Faith that is just talk is not faith. Faith that exists only at Mass is not faith. Living a life of faith in the truest sense is acting with love in response to Jesus' words and questions in your life.

By the way, a few days ago, two Japanese people who are studying English at Monash College and I ate sushi at a sushi restaurant. It was our first time eating sushi at a sushi restaurant in Melbourne. Although it didn't taste like sushi in Japan, many Japanese people came to eat it. The three of us ate while chatting about studying in Melbourne and cultural differences. There was a lot of laughter and it was a lot of fun. When I was at Kichijoji Church, the Archdiocese of Tokyo, I never thought I would be able to eat sushi with Japanese people in Melbourne. I guess, this is the path that God has given me. I am so grateful to be able to have new experiences every day and to be able to continue my work as a student and missionary with the seminarians at Box Hill.
